The Kirk in the Heather

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! While researching my master's dissertation for the University of the Highlands and Islands, I uncovered many fascinating people and events that I couldn't include in my work. Here, I hope to share their stories with you and bring their history to life. My primary focus was the Rev. James Cumming of Melness (1821–1894), a devoted minister who served his congregation with unwavering dedication. Beyond his pastoral duties, he was also a passionate activist, striving to restore the land to the crofters who had been displaced during the infamous Highland Clearances. His story, along with others, inspires this blog and its exploration of faith, resilience, and Highland history.
